Proteas DaNoi AEL

The queen of Cyprus Basketball, team of Proteas DaNoi AEL is the most successful team in Cyprus since the beginning of the Basketball in the island. Especially the last decade, the Cyprus team made us proud in the European courts too.
The Limassol basketball club was founded in 1966 and it is one of the founding members of Cyprus Basketball Federation. With coach one of the schoolteachers of the sport in Cyprus, Michalakis Nikolaidis, the Limassol team took part in the first official championship in 1967. It is established as the “queen” of Cyprus Basketball due to the amazing performances and the titles won.  Other than the 15 championships, the 9 Cups and the 7 Super Cups, AEL is the only Cypriot team that has ever won a European title (Regional Challenge Cup, South Conference 2003). In 2007, for the fifth consecutive year, the team won the Cypriot championship, becoming the first Cypriot side to do so.
The historic moment for the Cyprus Basketball and especially AEL Limassos which took place in 2003, was the time when the “queen” was crowned with their first European crown after conquering the newly established Regional Challenge Cup (South Conference), under the coaching of the best ever Coach the Serbian/Cyprus Dragan Raca. That was a triumph which has been achieved with the astonishing record of 10 victories in 10 games. That was the beginning of the European success of AEL Limassol which continues until today. After winning the Regional Challenge Cup, AEL participated as Cypriot champions the following year in the new FIBA EuroCup and qualified from the group phase to the top 16 teams. In the Group phase, AEL eliminated teams like the Greek Peristeri and the French  Paris Basket Racing. They were eliminated in the round of 16 by the very strong Israelli team of Hapoel Tel Aviv. They were very close to do the same achievement in the same competition in 2004-05 and t in 2005-06, when the competition changed formation AEL achieved to pass the first group round by finishing second, eliminating the Greek ex super house of PAOK BC and the newly rice Estonian Kallev Tallinn and reached the second round (round of 16) where they finished last in their group.
The most successful Foreign player ever played in AEL is no other than Duane Woodward, the American player left his trademark after leading his team in the three consecutive championships and the amazing European title as pre-mentioned
There are many Basketball players who left their trademark in the Basketball history of the country but the most important ones were the following:
George Thyrotos  who was the biggest name for Cyprus Basketball and of course for AEL too, and who’s unfortunate and sudden death cut his life at the age of 47, He was captain of the Cyprus Basketball National team at the first appearance of the country's National Team at the GSSE. In Monaco 1987 Thyrotos played the last three matches of his international career, which had begun in 1970. A perceptive playmaker, with great perception of the game and leadership skills, Thyrotos joined the men's team of AEL Limassol at the age of 14. At 15 he was on the starting lineup and a year later he was called to the National Team. He had been present during the "hard years" of Basketball in Cyprus but remained to see the sport pull through.
Thyrotos had been the captain of the Cyprus National Team from 1970 until his retirement in 1987. He was a leader in the first appearances of Cyprus at the qualifying rounds of the European Championship and won a gold medal at the 1985 GSSE. No one present at the Awards Ceremony can ever forget the tears in his eyes as he accepted the medal. As a player and later player/coach of AEL, Thyrotos has won everything between 1970 and 1980. He had also served as National Team coach and continued his successes leading the women's National Team to its first medals.
A major figure for Basketball in Cyprus, Thyrotos was betrayed by his heart in January 2001, at the age of 47. But he lives on, in the memories of the people who consider themselves lucky to have met him. The street running in front of AEL's stadium is named in honor of his memory and his no 15 shirt hangs in a prominent position inside.
Other players who left their footprint in AEL's history the last two decades are the following:
Marios Thrasyvoulidis
Antonis Evzonas,
Palalas Family (father and sons)
Kounounis Family  (father and son)
The Serbians Milutin Aleksic, Aleksandar Radojevic, the Monte Negrin Radunovic and of course the most successful American player of all times, the mas who basecally helped like no other American the team of AEL to win the one and only European trophy back in 2003, Duanne Woodward. Duanne played for three seasons in the team of AEL and is consider being the top performer ever. He won with AEL everything, in the season 2002-2003 the amazing triple crown a moment which very difficult will be ever repeated for any sport in Cyprus.
