National Team Coaches

Christos Stylianides

Date of birth: 03 May, 1968   |   Nationality: Cypriot   |   Coach of: MENS NATIONAL TEAM

Christos Stylianides, the Cypriot Gallis as his nickname was while being an active player, consider being the best point guard in the modern History of Cyprus. He is the only player won champions with all the teams played (ENAD, Keravnos Strovolou) the specific record van be balanced only by one player, Giorgos Anastasiadis if his current team (Etha Engomis) finally wins the title.

Christos has another record, he is the only player who right after the end of his career as a player he became a Head Coach continue to win titles (APOEL Nicosia) after only three years coaching.
The 43 years old “young” Head Coach won as a player five champion leagues with three different teams and one Cyprus Cup. As a head coach he won the 2008-2009 title with the team of APOEL Nicosia while from 2008 is the Head Coach of the Cyprus National Team after spending two years as an assistant coach to Predrag Benacek.

This year (8/4/2011) the Cyprus Federation renewed his contract for another one year. During his time in the National Team of Cyprus, the years 2009 and 2010 nothing serious happened as for the Eurobasket Qualifiers The Cyprus National team succeeded three victories while lost five times, and with a record of 3-5 came out third out of Five teams with Belarus coming first with a record of 7-1 and Switzerland coming second with a record of 5-3.

Christos Stylianides basically used (for Eurobasket 2009 qualifiers) all and all five players with Panagiotis Trisokkas of Keravnos, Aris Korononides of Apollon Patras, and Alexis Liatsos of AEL Limassol nearly playing 30-32 minutes, while Antreas Pilavas of Keravnos, and Jo-Jo Garcia of Keravnos were playing around 27 minutes per game.

The greatest moment for Christos Stylianides as a head Coach of the Cyprus team came in the 13th Games of small States of Europe, in June 2009, the Cyprus National Team won the gold medal unbeaten and after thrashing the teams of Luxemburg 80-57, the team of Iceland 87-54, the San Marino NT 86-53, the Maltese NT 69-55 and the Andorra NT with 91-70 having as a top scorer the usual suspect, Panagiotis Trisokkas with 13.4ppg, followed by Koronides with 12ppg, Jo-Jo Garcia and Kounas with 10ppg each and Anastasiadis with 8ppg in his last games with the Cyprus NT jersey. The games were not to be criticized as the National teams who came in Cyprus were of a very low quality. In any case Stylianides had a perfect record of 5-0.

In his next attempt, Christos Stylianides for the Eurobasket 2011 qualifiers at this stage the Cyprus National Team is (currently) at the last spot of the board after losing from all its opponents quite easily, from Czech Republic and Slovak Republic, the team of Cyprus was simply thrashed with 43 and 27 points respectively while from the team of Switzerland lost the only home court game until now, Cyprus NT lost by 67-70.

In the qualifiers of the Eurobasket 2011, the captain of the National Team and one of the top performers in the Cyprus League, Giorgos Anastasiadis was not present as he decided to give space to younger players and retired, so Coach Stylianides used in the three games of this first round of the qualifiers the following players:  Panagiotis Trisokkas of Keravnos Strovolou with an average of 32 minutes per game, followed by Andreas Sizopoulos who was playing for around 25 minutes per game, and followed by the biggest surprise of the National Team of Cyprus the last decade the young player of Keravnos Strovolou Christopher Razis who had no real time in the league due to the so many foreigners but he was the top performer of the NT with as many as 10 points per game, 2.4 assists per game, 2 rebounds and 1 steal per game in the three games played.

All and all the record of Christos Stylianides as a Head Coach of the Cyprus NT is currently 8-8. Within the next months this record will either be better or much worst as the three games in Cyprus and away will be quite decisive for the future of the specific National team members
